Well they can't get PC viruses. But if a person were to write a Mac virus and you were to download, install and run it then it would affect your Mac although being that OS X is built differently that Windows - it is more modular than Windows, if you did install some malware it would only do limited damage to certain files on your Mac.

There are no OS X viruses in the wild although there are about 4 possible Trojans floating around as Quicktime updates and IM files on IM sites that could do a bit of damage if you can get them to run on your Mac - but you would have to install them first.

Its really not like it do have some disadvantages,

but its better than the others.
